Quick answer

Catch manageable creatures, finish them safely, sell ordinary catches and spend only when an upgrade removes a real bottleneck. Keep every unusual boss drop until the local quest is complete.

The core loop in four moves

  1. Hook a creature you can control. Learn the pull and fight rhythm on common catches before using boss bait.
  2. Create space and finish the fight. The physics are chaotic; avoid standing in the creature’s direct approach path.
  3. Sell ordinary catches to fund one useful upgrade at a time.
  4. Read the active quest before selling, eating or dropping anything that looks like a skull, fin, tail or trophy.

A practical first-hour route

Talk to every visible character at the lighthouse before roaming. Pick up free clams, use them for food or early cash, then buy the Basic Fishing Rod. Start with the free lure and easy crustaceans.

The supplied walkthrough prices the Basic Fishing Rod at $3, Hotdog Lures at $1 and the radar at $10. Those are source observations rather than a permanent economy guarantee, so re-check the shop after patches.

  • Build a small cash buffer on normal catches.
  • Choose either the knife or brass knuckles; improve the tool you can control.
  • Use the Beer Can sequence when you are ready for the first boss.
  • Buy the radar before the first longer boat trip.

The rule that saves a second boss fight

Bosses may scatter meat and a distinctive hand-in piece. Players describe these items as skulls, fins, tails or trophy-shaped parts. The label varies; the safe rule does not: pick up the unusual piece, return to the quest giver, then sell the leftovers.

Logbook note: In co-op, say who picked up the trophy and have that player present for the hand-in.

Save at the right moments

The manual-save rule is unchanged since Patch 1.0.6: the game writes on Save, Main Menu and Quit, checks a save before loading it and autosaves every minute as a fallback. Use Save after an expensive purchase, a boss trophy or an island unlock, then leave through Main Menu or Quit when possible.

Patch 1.0.11 adds local protection on top: saves are always checked for corruption before loading and now receive backups if they become corrupt. That announcement does not promise recovery for an already-deleted campaign, and no public filename or manual restore sequence is documented — preserve the whole LocalLow save folder.

Patch 1.0.12 (September 4, 2026) moves saves to Steam Cloud: the official note says to play on the PC that holds your save and quit once, and the save uploads. It does not say whether saves then sync automatically to your other PCs. The 1.0.11 local layer still applies — the 1.0.12 note does not withdraw it — and neither announcement promises recovery for an already-deleted campaign.

The Islet Update 1.1.0: what the first content update adds

The Islet Update 1.1.0 landed on September 28, 2026 and is the game’s first content update. The official announcement is a change list rather than a guide: it says what was added without publishing a single name, number or price.

Two existing things were tuned as well — the volume of some sound effects and the distance between each island. Island spacing changes travel time more than combat, so re-time a normal voyage after updating before you judge a boat engine purchase.

Older 1.0.12 advice stays valid rather than final. Nothing in the 1.1.0 note withdraws the Steam Cloud save behaviour, the item velocity limit or the piranha and tuna changes from 1.0.12.

  • Added: a bundle with PEAK!.
  • Added: a new weapon.
  • Added: multiple mini islands.
  • Added: more creatures.
  • Added: a new mini-boss.
  • Added: more items.
  • Added: a new bait.
  • Added: a new NPC.
  • Added: new achievements.
  • Added: a new outfit.
  • Changed: the volume of some sound effects.
  • Changed: the distance between each island.

Logbook note: As of The Islet Update 1.1.0 (September 28, 2026) the official post does not name the new weapon, bait, NPC, mini-boss, creatures, items, achievements or outfit, and it publishes no stats, drop rates, prices or PEAK! bundle contents. Check the in-game shop, Fishipedia and the achievements list for current names; this manual does not invent them.

Small Bugfixing Patch 1.1.2: rebinding, bow skins and mini-island tuning

The official Steam News post “SMALL BUGFIXING PATCH 1.1.2” landed on September 29, 2026 as an adjustment pass for The Islet Update rather than new content. Under NEW it adds rebinding for the reload action and two new skins for the bow.

Under CHANGES it raises the new bait’s spawn on the new mini island from 2 to 3, makes shiny fishing rod skins shinier, adjusts wishbone upgrade pricing, increases the size of mini island dots on the radar, and adds the option to downgrade to ironsight again.

Under FIXED it fixes Tench not being able to spawn from the new bait and triangles facing the wrong direction on the new mini-boss. The post publishes no exact prices, spawn statistics or skin names, and it asks players to restart Steam for the update.

Logbook note: Unconfirmed: the wishbone pricing itself and the new bait’s full spawn behaviour were not published. Source: Steam News official announcement, 2026-09-29. Review date: 2026-10-05.

Tiny Patch 1.1.3: Fishipedia now names the required bait

The official Steam News post “TINY PATCH 1.1.3” (September 29, 2026) adds one thing: Fishipedia now displays the name of the bait needed to catch a fish, shown after you have killed that fish once. The developer states the purpose is to make hunting drip creatures easier.

That condition matters while you build the index: a fish you have never killed shows no bait name yet, so the feature rewards finishing a creature once rather than reading it off a first sighting. The post publishes no new fish, bait or numbers.

Logbook note: Unconfirmed: no new fish or bait names were published for 1.1.3, so any 1.1.3 bait or species list circulating elsewhere is not backed by the announcement. Source: Steam News official announcement, 2026-09-29. Review date: 2026-10-05.
