Quick answer
How to Fish supports solo and online co-op. The Steam description says 1–4 players; the supplied patch brief states that Patch 1.0.4 added support for eight-player lobbies.
Current answer: up to eight in a lobby
| Source state | Player count | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Steam store description | 1–4 players | Original advertised group size. |
| Patch 1.0.4 brief | Up to 8 | Later lobby capability in the supplied project brief. |
| Solo | 1 | The campaign can be played alone. |
Make a large crew useful
- Let the targeted player kite while others fire from different angles.
- Keep one player watching the boat or reset route.
- Call out who takes the boss trophy.
- Have the trophy holder present when returning to the quest giver.
- Avoid stacking the whole team in one boss approach lane.
When co-op behaves strangely
Patch 1.0.11’s official wording for the join-inventory bug — the one that could make players invisible — is that it is “hopefully fixed.” Treat a repeatable 1.0.11 case as useful evidence, not proof that the player skipped the update.
If a disconnect complains about a Version Mismatch, restart Steam and make sure every player receives the update before reconnecting — the official instruction for Patch 1.0.11 is to restart Steam. The main-menu Steam Relay status remains the first official signal to check when connection initialization fails.
Keep the older safeguards: protect unique items before retrying an encounter, confirm which save or host owns the active objective, and keep the item holder present for the hand-in.
Patch 1.0.12 (September 4, 2026) updates voice chat to MetaVoice 4.3, which the official note says will “hopefully” fix some bugs in voice chat, and stops FishNet from overriding your max FPS when you join a lobby. Restart Steam so the update applies before reconnecting.
Logbook note: Player limits and session behavior are version-sensitive. This page reflects Patch 1.0.12 as of September 4, 2026.
